Introducing the Technology Features
These editorially-independent features, published in the Nature and Nature Methods print journals and online on nature.com, spotlight scientists, the technology, and the methods they choose – their views of what works and what does not – providing key information that scientists globally can implement in their own labs.
25 Technology Features are being published in Nature and Nature Methods throughout 2020, and in August, Nature is publishing its next Technology Feature on Data Science.
‘Data science: Putting computational reproducibility to the test’
Computation is an integral part of the scientific process, and that part is only getting larger. From DNA sequencers, to telescopes, to particle colliders, scientific data is often too large and complicated to work with by hand. Even when the datasets are smaller, researchers with an eye towards reproducibility seek to codify the methods with which they manipulate them. Yet all too often, the fundamental ingredients of data analysis are unavailable – a substantial fraction of papers are published without either the underlying data that emerges from an experiment, or the software code used to transform it. Even when those components are available, it can be surprisingly difficult to run another researcher’s code – or even for a researcher to run their own code years in the future. But with an increasing focus on computational reproducibility, many in the scientific community are working to change all that.
The Technology Feature will cover:
- The challenge of code reuse
- The evolving reproducibility toolbox
- Best practices
