Duke-NUS Medical School was established in 2005 through a collaboration between two world-class institutions: Duke University and the National University of Singapore (NUS). The school’s objective is to provide innovative education and impactful research that enhances the practice of medicine in Singapore and beyond.
Nature Research Academies are high-quality workshops designed for larger groups delivered on-site by our expert trainers on topics relevant to early and mid-career scientists, such as getting published, research data, or clinical research methodology. When the coronavirus pandemic led to a global shutdown, Nature Research had to quickly pivot its research training packages to adapt to these unique challenges.
NUS, like many institutions across the world impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, could no longer deliver in-person educational development to students and researchers. When approached by the Faculty of Medicine to deliver training on writing manuscripts for their graduate students and post-doctoral researchers, we saw an opportunity to deliver this training as a two-hour webinar.
It simply wasn’t the case of delivering the same training over a video feed. Our researcher training team optimized our content to be more appropriate for online delivery, tested video-sharing solutions, and conducted internal pilots all to ensure a smooth transition to a virtual delivery platform. Also, we made sure to retain the aspects of the training that our students found most beneficial, such as an attendee resource booklet and interactivity with the facilitator.
The comprehensive support we offered before and during the workshop was greatly appreciated. For example, before the event, our team including the trainer conducted a dry-run with the institution and provided all the materials needed. During and after the event, we were there to answer any questions or requests as well as provide completion certificates and a wrap-up report. This technical and administrative support helped the event run smoothly and offered peace of mind to the customer.
All attendees of the workshop found that the topics were relevant (77% strongly agree, 23% agree), the trainer was knowledgeable (85% strongly agree, 15% agree), and the contents were clear and engaging (77% strongly agree, 23% agree).
“The presenter was very engaging and used numerous examples to illustrate his points. The short polls introduced something I have not experienced in other presentations- it made me and the audience engage even further with the presenter and topic.”
“I liked that the PowerPoint slides and recording will also be available to refer to after the presentation because it’s easy to miss points when frantically trying to take notes during the presentation.”
