Heidelberg University is a public research university located in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The challenge

Heidelberg University was looking to provide professional and scalable training for all of its students and early career researchers, including over 9,000 PhD candidates.

Their priority was to find an accredited e-learning provider specializing in scientific communications that covered the entire research pipeline, from developing a research idea to successfully publishing the results.

Solution

Heidelberg University implemented Nature Masterclasses across its Graduate Academy, the central coordinating body for professional and academic development services, especially for PhD researchers.

The curriculum is provided in an e-learning format, so the university can provide training in a scalable way and ensure all early career researchers have access. The on-demand availability of the courses allows researchers to fit them in around their busy schedules.

Results

Heidelberg University received enthusiastic feedback from researchers who knew about Nature Masterclasses but were unable to afford individual subscriptions. Researchers outside of STEM disciplines, such as the humanities and social sciences, have also benefited from courses on how to prepare and share their research findings.

The university promoted Nature Masterclasses with a launch event presented by Nature Partnerships’ engagement and account manager, which was well attended and followed by a surge of registrations. They continue to promote Nature Masterclasses via newsletters, social media, and a series of seminars and networking events.

Heidelberg University has committed to providing Nature Masterclasses to its students, early career researchers, and staff until 2030.

We are conscious about our time and resources, but we are even more conscious about the time and resources of those who take the courses. Being able to offer a modular training solution such as Nature Masterclasses, meaning people could really pick and choose exactly the parts of training where they wanted to fill any knowledge gaps or drive their specialisation forward, is really important to us and those we provide training for at the Graduate Academy.
