Neuroscience: A choice of 2D and 3D assays
Labs need ever new ways to model the brain during development, in health and disease. But it’s a challenging organ to model.
In vitro, researchers can use stem cells that they coax to certain neural identities. In these 2D environments, scientists can do many types of controlled experiments. Alternatively, labs might choose 3D environments, for example they might use organoids or construct microfluidic devices. Some labs perform experiments in both 2D and 3D environments while others have a preference for one or the other.
