Genetics: Next-generation Base-editors

Base-editing makes it possible to edit a genome without the double-stranded breaks of editing with CRISPR-Cas. Both in vitro and in vivo base-editing experiments are underway. Base-editors can be used for different types of genome engineering and, perhaps, one day be used to therapeutically address disease-related mutations in people. To advance these tools with which one can target and convert a single nucleotide into another nucleotide, labs are continuously optimizing their base-editors. The Technology Feature takes a look at some of these efforts such as how labs are:

  • Exploring how to boost the efficiency of base-editing
  • Finding ways to eliminate or minimize off-target changes
  • Addressing experimental design issues
