Animal models: cephalopods
Cephalopods—squid, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses—are a unique group of invertebrate animals. Researchers are intrigued by their complex brains and behaviors and their distinctive abilities to change the patterns and colors of their skin and even edit their own RNA. The animals though can be challenging to culture and care for, and with about 800 living species to choose from, researchers have a lot of options.
There are currently efforts to identify a few species most amenable to the lab and to make them more available to interested researchers. Establishing model cephalopods will help the community develop scientific standards and husbandry ones too.
