Full-Service Advertorials

Client Guidelines for Nature Research Advertorials

Thank you for booking an advertorial with Nature Research. Nature Research provides a full advertorial creation service that includes writing, editing, and design. Should you prefer to write your copy, we will edit and design only.

We want your advertorial to be widely read. To achieve this, an advertorial should tell an interesting story that engages people with your organization or product. We recommend that advertorials be accessible to researchers reading outside of their area of expertise. If you aim to target a specific audience, details should be included on the advertorial briefing form (This PDF document contains interactive elements. To enable all functionality please right click on the link, select ’save link as’, save the PDF to your desktop, and then open with your PDF reader – we recommend Adobe Acrobat Reader.) such that the tone of the piece can be pitched accordingly.

Avoid using advertorial space to write purely promotional copy. If that’s your goal, a display advertisement may perform better.

Overview

  • Using the advertorial briefing form (This PDF document contains interactive elements. To enable all functionality please right click on the link, select ’save link as’, save the PDF to your desktop, and then open with your PDF reader – we recommend Adobe Acrobat Reader.), outline your objectives for the article and provide details of your interviewee(s). Where Nature Research is providing a full service, we will assign a writer to conduct interviews and draft the article, an editor to fine-tune the piece, and a project manager to coordinate the process.
  • Depending on your preferred layout, you will need to provide print-quality photography. Photographic images should be provided as TIFFs or JPEGs in CMYK and at 300dpi. You will need to provide your organization’s logo as an EPS or a PS format file, preferably in CMYK format at 300dpi.
  • Certain advertorial layout options include data visualization. The source of data is Nature Index, a database that tracks publication productivity and patterns of collaboration. If you choose advertorial layouts with data, Nature Research will select and present the most relevant Nature Index data to your institution. If your institution is not featured in the Nature Index, it will not be possible to include data and you will need to select an alternative advertorial layout.
  • The advertorial process takes a minimum of 7 weeks from booking to article sign-off, with a further 2 weeks after sign-off for printing.
  • There are four stages: 1. Pre-interview, 2. The interview and write-up, 3. Editing, and 4. Production.
  • The early stages are conducted using Microsoft Word.
  • The project manager will send you a schedule detailing each stage and checkpoint. If you are unable to meet any of the deadlines, you risk missing your preferred publication date.
  1. Pre-interview
  • Please review the advertorial layout options and then carefully complete the advertorial briefing form  (This PDF document contains interactive elements. To enable all functionality please right click on the link, select ’save link as’, save the PDF to your desktop, and then open with your PDF reader – we recommend Adobe Acrobat Reader.) Completed forms should be emailed to the project manager, who will share them with the writer.
  • Please also provide by email to the project manager all photography that you would like considered for the advertorial layout. Aim for a variety of subjects and perspectives. Images should be print quality (at least 300dpi). Any headshots should be taken in good light on a clean background free of distractions.
  1. The interview and write-up
  • The writer will contact the interviewee(s) named in the advertorial briefing form  (This PDF document contains interactive elements. To enable all functionality please right click on the link, select ’save link as’, save the PDF to your desktop, and then open with your PDF reader – we recommend Adobe Acrobat Reader.) to arrange a convenient time for the interview(s). Each interview will take up to 90 minutes.
  • The writer will draft the advertorial. Writers are instructed to produce interesting stories, complete with a compelling headline. If you have selected an advertorial layout that includes a data graphic, Nature Research will obtain relevant data about your organization from the Nature Index and include it within the draft.
  • This draft will be shared with you and the interviewee(s) for fact checking. This is the time to make major changes to the text if you identify any big issues. Mark your changes to the text using Track Changes.
  • The writer will incorporate any feedback into a second draft, which will be sent for editing.
  1. Editing
  • The editor will edit the advertorial for style and clarity, which will then be sent to you by the project manager.
  • Mark your changes to the text using Track Changes. Wholesale rewrites cannot be accommodated at this point. The word count should not change materially.
  • Internal approval (for example by your legal department) should be gained at this stage.
  • Send the approved, marked-up file to the project manager. If required, the project manager will arrange a call between you and the editor to agree to edits. The text, including the story headline, is signed-off.
  1. Production
  • The signed-off version of the article will be laid out according to the agreed style. The project manager will forward a PDF proof to you.
  • No major changes can be made at this stage. Minor proof corrections should be returned promptly. Proof corrections will be made, and the advertorial sent for printing.
