Green laboratories: Building a sustainable research culture
Research facilities typically have a carbon footprint approximately ten-fold-higher than comparable buildings, thanks to their reliance on energy-intensive -80 oC freezers and fume hoods, and extensive use of plastics. Changing appliances or a building’s energy source can be difficult. But researchers in individual labs are paving the way to greener science, for instance by switching out plastics for glass, increasing freezer temperatures and sharing instruments to reduce their footprint. Some have expanded these efforts to entire campuses and even founded companies to make science more sustainable.
This Technology feature will cover:
• Strategies for reducing plastic and energy waste
• How researchers can expand their efforts beyond their own labs
• Non-environmental benefits of green labs
