Behind the scenes: A decade-long medical story across two continents

When it comes to communicating complex medical stories, clarity and compliance are essential. Our Nature Custom Media team recently took on an ambitious project: producing a video that spanned two continents, covered a decade of medical progress, and navigated regulatory hurdles — all while delivering a compelling, audience-focused narrative.

Shooting the video 'How to beat a brain-eating amoeba'

The challenge

The story centered on a race against time to save the life of a patient suffering from a brain-eating amoeba. What began as a last-ditch effort led doctors halfway across the world and to a potential breakthrough in the treatment of this rare and deadly neurological infection.

Our custom media team needed to capture this extraordinary journey without oversimplifying the science or overwhelming viewers with technical detail.

Navigating regulatory timelines

Timing was everything. When our team was first approached to produce the video, the treatment in question hadn’t yet been stockpiled by the US CDC in the USA. Shooting the video too soon would have raised awareness of a treatment before patients had access to it. Upon our advice, our partner opted to delay production until the treatment was available in the USA, allowing us to tell a complete, accurate, and compliant story.

Global collaboration

Filming took place in two major cities on opposite sides of the world, San Francisco in the USA and Shanghai in China. Achieving visual consistency across locations was essential for a seamless viewing experience. Our production teams in both locations worked closely to match tone, style, and quality.

Storytelling across time

The narrative spanned ten years of developments. To keep viewers engaged, we combined on-screen text for key milestones with voiceover, ensuring clarity without sacrificing pace.

Lessons learned

This project reinforced some important principles for scientific storytelling:

  • Patience pays off: Waiting for drug availability in the USA allowed us to tell a complete, global story.
  • Visual consistency matters: Coordinating production across multiple international locations requires meticulous planning to achieve a unified look.
  • Clarity is king: Complex science needs thoughtful pacing and supporting visuals to resonate with audiences.

We’d like to thank our partners who commissioned us for this fantastic project. We’re proud to share this story with the Springer Nature audience and wider scientific community, showcasing how thoughtful storytelling can bring complex breakthroughs to life. We hope you can take a moment to watch the video — it’s a powerful example of what an international team can achieve together.
