Introducing the Technology Features
These editorially-independent features, published in the Nature and Nature Methods print journals and online on nature.com, spotlight scientists, the technology, and the methods they choose – their views of what works and what does not – providing key information that scientists globally can implement in their own labs.
25 Technology Features are being published in Nature and Nature Methods throughout 2020, and in June, Nature Methods is publishing its next Technology Feature on cell biology.
‘Cell biology: phase separation’
When phase separation takes place inside a cell, membraneless compartments are formed. The labs who study these special areas—condensates—and their processes belong to a young, emerging field that is beginning to characterize the wide array of events associated with phase separation.
The field has and uses methods. But researchers are working on more and different ones. To drive the field of phase separation forward, researchers are leveraging approaches in polymer physics and working on specific tools geared toward work in cells. This Technology Feature checks in with labs about tool-development and will include:
- Methods for studying disordered regions of proteins
- Optogenetic tools
- Approaches to characterize condensate dynamics
